    Ryan Kent Bio

Ryan Kent (born 11 November 1996) is an English professional footballer who plays as a forward or winger for Major League Soccer club Seattle Sounders FC. He had previously played for teams in England, Germany, Scotland, and Turkey. A graduate of the Liverpool academy, Kent made his single first-team appearance for the club in January 2016, after a loan spell with Coventry City.

Over the course of his career, Kent has built a reputation as a creative attacker known for his dribbling and direct running. He has represented England at youth level and has competed in both the UEFA Champions League and the UEFA Europa League.

    Early Life and Background

Ryan Kent was born on 11 November 1996 in Oldham, England. He joined the Liverpool academy at the age of seven and progressed steadily through the club’s youth system, becoming a regular member of the under-21 squad. His development during his teenage years was marked by consistent performances for the reserves, which earned him a new four-and-a-half-year contract in March 2015.

After an impressive end to the 2014–15 campaign for the reserves, Kent was rewarded with a place in Liverpool’s first-team squad for the 2015 pre-season tour of Thailand, Australia, and Malaysia. He made his first-team debut on 17 July 2015, coming off the bench in a 2–1 win over Australian A-League side Brisbane Roar, and was subsequently assigned a first-team squad number.

    Path to Soccer

Kent’s pathway into senior professional football began with a youth loan to Coventry City in September 2015, where he made his professional debut as a substitute in a League One match against Scunthorpe United. He scored his first senior goal in a 4–3 win over Barnsley in November 2015, performances that prompted a recall to Liverpool for assessment by new manager Jürgen Klopp.

In January 2016, Kent was named in the Liverpool first team for an FA Cup third-round tie against Exeter City, making his competitive debut for the club. He was then loaned to Barnsley for the 2016–17 season, where he scored his first goal for the club against Rotherham United and was named Barnsley’s Young Player of the Season.

    Ryan Kent Career

    Early Career (2015–2018)

Following his time at Barnsley, Kent signed a new long-term contract with Liverpool in August 2017 and was immediately loaned to German Bundesliga side SC Freiburg for the season. The spell proved difficult, as he made just six appearances before his loan was terminated in January 2018 and he returned to Liverpool.

Kent then joined Championship side Bristol City on loan until the end of the 2017–18 season. The move was unsuccessful, with Kent playing just ten league games without scoring, leading to reported compensation owed to Liverpool due to his limited playing time.

    Rangers Breakthrough (2018–2019)

On 22 July 2018, Kent joined Scottish Premiership side Rangers on a season-long loan. He made his debut on 26 July 2018 in a Europa League victory over NK Osijek, followed by his SPFL debut on 5 August 2018 in a 1–1 draw against Aberdeen. He scored his first goal for the club on 15 September 2018 in a 4–0 win over Dundee.

During the 2018–19 season, Kent made 43 appearances in all competitions, scoring six goals and providing nine assists. He was named Rangers’ Young Player of the Year and also won the PFA Scotland Young Player of the Year award, while being selected in the PFA Scotland Team of the Year. A memorable moment came on 31 March 2019, when he scored in an Old Firm derby against Celtic.

    Rangers Permanent Spell (2019–2023)

After spending Liverpool’s 2019 pre-season under Jürgen Klopp, who publicly praised his performance against Sevilla, Kent signed for Rangers permanently on 3 September 2019 on a four-year contract. The initial transfer fee paid to Liverpool was reported at £6.5 million, with potential add-ons included.

Over five seasons at Ibrox, Kent played in over 150 matches across all competitions, featuring in both the UEFA Champions League and the UEFA Europa League. Rangers confirmed on 23 May 2023 that Kent would leave the club at the end of the 2022–23 season.

    Fenerbahçe Era (2023–2024)

On 12 June 2023, Kent signed a four-year deal with Turkish Süper Lig club Fenerbahçe. He scored his first goal for the club in a 5–0 UEFA Europa Conference League qualifying win over Zimbru Chișinău on 26 July 2023, and made his league debut on 13 August 2023 in a 2–1 victory over Gaziantep FK.

On 17 October 2024, Fenerbahçe announced that Kent’s contract had been terminated by mutual agreement after just over a year with the club.

    Seattle Sounders FC Era (2025–Present)

On 31 March 2025, Kent signed a one-year contract with Major League Soccer side Seattle Sounders FC for the remainder of the 2025 season. The Sounders brought him in to fill the void left by Paul Arriola’s season-ending injury, and the deal includes an option for the 2026 season. He made his MLS debut on 19 April 2025 as a late substitute against Nashville SC.

    Driving Style and Strengths

Kent operates primarily as a winger, comfortable on either flank but most often deployed on the left, and he can also play as a second striker or attacking midfielder. He is widely recognized for his dribbling ability and his comfort in one-on-one situations, complemented by strong workrate and reliable crossing. Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp highlighted those qualities after a pre-season match against Sevilla, calling Kent a wonderful player with sensational moments in duels.

    Notable Events and Milestones

Among the standout moments of Kent’s career are his Old Firm derby goal for Rangers against Celtic in 2019, his PFA Scotland Young Player of the Year honor, and his permanent £6.5 million move to Rangers in 2019. He has also represented England at under-18 and under-20 levels, scoring two goals in two appearances for the under-18s and one goal in six appearances for the under-20s.

The Sounders targeted him as a direct replacement for Paul Arriola, who had suffered a season-ending injury weeks earlier. His contract includes an option for the 2026 season.

Kent made his MLS debut on 19 April 2025, coming off the bench late against Nashville SC, and he is expected to compete for minutes across the winger positions in the Seattle attack. With the deal running through the end of the 2025 campaign, Kent has an opportunity to rebuild his form in Major League Soccer and establish a longer-term role at the club.

His adaptation to MLS will be closely watched, given his prior experience in the English, German, Scottish, and Turkish top flights. Should he find consistent playing time and contribute goals and assists, Kent could become a key part of the Sounders’ attack heading into the 2026 season option year.
