Vítek Vaněček Bio
Vítek Vaněček (born 9 January 1996) is a Czech professional ice hockey player who plays the goaltender position for the Utah Mammoth of the National Hockey League (NHL). Selected 39th overall in the 2014 NHL Entry Draft by the Washington Capitals, Vaněček has spent more than a decade working his way through professional hockey in both Europe and North America. He is a Stanley Cup champion, having won with the Florida Panthers in 2025, and he signed with the Utah Mammoth as a free agent on 1 July 2025 to begin a new chapter in his career.
Early Life and Background
Vítek Vaněček was born on 9 January 1996 in Havlíčkův Brod, Czech Republic. He grew up in a country where ice hockey is a central part of sporting culture, and he was drawn to the position of goaltender at a young age. Standing 188 cm tall and weighing 83 kg, Vaněček developed the size and frame that have become important tools in his professional career.
Vaněček originally played as a youth with HC Havlíčkův Brod, the club in his hometown, progressing through the ranks up to the under-18 level. That local foundation gave him the technical base he would need as he moved into higher levels of competition and prepared him for the demands of professional hockey.
Path to Hockey
In 2013, Vaněček joined the junior program of HC Bílí Tygři Liberec, one of the prominent clubs in the Czech Extraliga system. The move marked his first step into a top-tier development environment, and he continued to refine his game against strong competition.
His play in the Czech junior ranks caught the attention of NHL scouts, and in 2014 he was selected 39th overall in the NHL Entry Draft by the Washington Capitals. On 15 July 2014, he signed a three-year entry-level contract with the Capitals, formally beginning his professional career in North America. In the 2014–15 season, he appeared in two games with HC Bílí Tygři Liberec of the Czech Extraliga and spent much of the rest of the year with HC Benátky nad Jizerou of the 1st Czech Republic Hockey League, gaining valuable experience as a young goaltender.
Vítek Vaněček Career
Early Career (2015–2019)
After signing with the Capitals organization, Vaněček moved to North America and split his time between the South Carolina Stingrays of the ECHL and the Hershey Bears of the American Hockey League (AHL) from 2015 to 2016. Following a strong 2015–16 season with the Stingrays, he was named to the ECHL All-Rookie Team, an early sign of his professional potential.
He continued to develop in the Capitals’ system over the following seasons. In 2019, Vaněček was selected to his first AHL All-Star Classic roster, and in 2020 he replaced Michael Sgarbossa on the Atlantic Division roster. He went on to be named the Most Valuable Player of the 2020 AHL All-Star Classic after leading the Atlantic Division to a championship, allowing only two goals in four games.
Washington Capitals Breakthrough (2020–2021)
Vaněček was named the Capitals’ backup goaltender shortly before the 2020–21 season, working behind Ilya Samsonov. His opportunity came sooner than expected when Samsonov was placed on the NHL’s COVID-19 protocol list in mid-January 2021 after only two appearances. Vaněček was thrust into the starting role and made an immediate impact.
On 15 January 2021, he started his first NHL game, saving 30 of 31 shots and earning his first victory in a 2–1 win over the Buffalo Sabres. His strong play was recognized league-wide when he was named the NHL Rookie of the Month for January 2021. He recorded his first NHL shutout on 15 March 2021, stopping every shot in a 6–0 win over the Sabres. Later that spring, he started Game 1 of the 2021 Stanley Cup playoffs for Washington but was injured early in the game and had to be replaced by Craig Anderson.
Seattle, Return, and Trade to New Jersey (2021–2022)
On 21 July 2021, Vaněček was selected by the Seattle Kraken in the 2021 NHL Expansion Draft. A week later, the Kraken traded him back to the Capitals in exchange for a 2023 second-round pick. He returned to the Washington crease and posted a 36-save shutout on 3 March 2022, helping the Capitals beat the Carolina Hurricanes 4–0.
New Jersey Devils Era (2022–2024)
For the second consecutive off-season, Vaněček left the Capitals organization when he was traded at the 2022 NHL Entry Draft to the New Jersey Devils in exchange for a swap of second-round picks and a third-round pick on 8 July 2022. As a restricted free agent, he later signed a three-year, $10.2 million contract extension with the Devils on 19 July, cementing his role as a key goaltending piece for the franchise.
San Jose Sharks and Florida Panthers (2024–2025)
On 8 March 2024, Vaněček was traded, along with a 2025 seventh-round pick, to the San Jose Sharks in exchange for Kaapo Kähkönen. The 2024–25 season was a difficult one for him, as injuries limited him to 18 games in which he posted only 3 wins while playing for a rebuilding Sharks team.
On 5 March 2025, Vaněček was traded by the Sharks to the Florida Panthers in exchange for Patrick Giles. Serving as the backup to Sergei Bobrovsky, he posted 2 wins in 7 regular-season appearances. He did not appear in the post-season, but he was part of the Panthers roster when they won their second consecutive Stanley Cup in 2025.
Utah Mammoth Era (2025–Present)
As a free agent following the Panthers’ championship run, Vaněček signed a one-year, $1.5 million contract with the Utah Mammoth for the 2025–26 season on 1 July 2025. The signing brought him to a brand-new franchise and gave him an opportunity to establish himself as a full-time NHL starter.
Notable Events and Milestones
Among the defining moments of Vaněček’s career are his 30-save debut win over the Buffalo Sabres in January 2021, his first NHL shutout later that same season, his MVP performance at the 2020 AHL All-Star Classic, and his place on the Florida Panthers’ 2025 Stanley Cup roster. He also represented the Czech Republic at the 2015 World Junior Ice Hockey Championships, playing three games for his country’s national junior team.

2025 Season Performance
Vaněček’s 2025 calendar year was split between the San Jose Sharks and the Florida Panthers. His time with the Sharks was limited by injury, and he managed just 3 wins in 18 appearances before being traded to Florida on 5 March 2025. With the Panthers, he settled into a backup role behind Sergei Bobrovsky and contributed 2 wins in 7 regular-season games.
