Wilder Cartagena Bio
Wilder José Cartagena Mendoza (born 23 September 1994) is a Peruvian professional footballer who plays as a defensive midfielder for Major League Soccer club Orlando City and the Peru national team. Standing 180 cm tall, he has built a career across South America, Europe, North America, and the Middle East. Known for his positional discipline and ball-winning ability, Cartagena has represented Peru at youth and senior levels, including the 2018 FIFA World Cup.
Early Life and Background
Wilder Cartagena was born in El Carmen, a town in the Ica region of Peru. He grew up in modest surroundings, spending most of his free time playing football on the streets and on a poor local pitch. The 2007 Pisco earthquake severely affected El Carmen and collapsed his school, forcing him to relocate to Lima to continue his studies.
While studying in Lima, Cartagena made friends who were involved with youth football at various clubs, which led him to try out for Alianza Lima. He was accepted into the academy and initially played as a goalkeeper. After a scrimmage between his school team and the Alianza Lima academy, club coaches decided to move him into midfield, a change that shaped his future as a defensive midfielder.
Path to Soccer
Cartagena’s rise through the Alianza Lima academy marked the beginning of his professional path. He was promoted to the first team in January 2012 and made his Torneo Descentralizado debut on matchday one in a 2–2 home draw against León de Huánuco. Manager José Soto continued to trust him, and he featured again as a starter in an away match against Juan Aurich.
His international youth career began in 2011, when he was called up to the Peru U17 team by manager Juan José Oré for the 2011 South American U-17 Championship in Ecuador. He made his debut on 12 March 2011 in a 4–2 loss to Argentina. In 2013, he joined the Peru U20 squad for the 2013 South American Youth Football Championship in Argentina under manager Daniel Ahmed, debuting on 10 January in a 3–3 draw with Uruguay.

His role at Orlando City has emphasized composure under pressure and reliable distribution, complementing more attack-minded midfielders.
Notable Events and Milestones

2025 Season Performance
Wilder Cartagena’s 2025 season was disrupted by a serious injury suffered on 25 January during a preseason friendly against Atlético Mineiro. The injury prevented him from contributing on the pitch for Orlando City throughout the campaign.
Despite missing the entire season, Cartagena remained an important figure in the Orlando City locker room. On 12 November 2025, the club rewarded his commitment and leadership by signing him to a one-year contract with a club option for 2027. The deal reflected the organization’s confidence in his recovery and long-term value to the squad.
Looking ahead, Cartagena is expected to focus on rehabilitation and a full return to fitness in time for the 2026 preseason. His experience as a defensive midfielder and his familiarity with head coach Óscar Pareja’s system position him as a candidate to reclaim a regular role once he is match-fit.
