Chellie Pingree Bio
Chellie Marie Pingree (born Rochelle Marie Johnson; April 2, 1955) is an American politician serving as the U.S. representative for Maine’s 1st congressional district since 2009. A member of the Democratic Party, she represents most of the southern portion of the state, an area centered around Portland. She is the first Democratic woman elected to the U.S. House of Representatives from Maine.
Before her time in Congress, Pingree served in the Maine Senate from 1992 to 2000, including four years as majority leader. She later ran unsuccessfully for the U.S. Senate in 2002 and led Common Cause as president and CEO from 2003 to 2006. She is also a former small business owner, nonprofit executive, and author of knitting books.
Early Life and Background
Chellie Pingree was born Rochelle Marie Johnson in Minneapolis, Minnesota, to Harry Johnson and Dorothy Johnson. She moved to Maine as a teenager and later had her first name legally changed to Chellie. Growing up between Minnesota and Maine shaped her early understanding of small communities and rural life.
She attended the University of Southern Maine before graduating from the College of the Atlantic with a Bachelor of Arts in human ecology. After college, she settled on North Haven, a small island community off the coast of Rockland, Maine, where she has continued to live.
Path to US Politics
Before entering public service, Pingree worked in farming and caretaker roles until 1981, when she founded North Island Yarn, a cottage industry of hand knitters with a retail store on North Haven. The business grew into North Island Designs, eventually employing about ten workers and distributing knitting kits and pattern books through roughly 1,200 retail stores and 100,000 mail-order catalogues. She authored and produced five knitting books between 1986 and 1992.
In 1997, Eisenhower Fellowships selected her as a USA Eisenhower Fellow. Her work as a small business owner and island resident informed her later interest in civic life, leading her to seek election to the Maine Senate in 1992.

Early Career (1992–2000)
Pingree was first elected to the Maine Senate in 1992, representing the 21st district and winning every town in the district except Belmont. She was redistricted to the 12th district and reelected in 1994, 1996, and 1998. In 1996, she became Maine’s second female majority leader, a position she held for her final four years in the chamber.
During her tenure in the Maine Senate, Pingree authored the nation’s first bill regulating prescription drug prices, Maine Rx, which drew nationwide attention. She also shepherded Maine’s largest land-bill initiative, Land for Maine’s Future. Term limits prevented her from seeking reelection to the state Senate in 2000.
Breakthrough (2002–2008)
In 2002, Pingree ran for the United States Senate seat held by Republican Susan Collins but lost, 58% to 42%. From 2003 to 2006, she served as president and CEO of Common Cause, where she worked on media reform, elections, ethics, and money in politics. She supported net neutrality, mandatory voter-verified paper ballots, public financing of congressional elections, the national popular vote, and an independent ethics commission for Congress.
She stepped down from Common Cause in February 2007 to return to Maine and run for Congress. In April 2007, she filed papers for Maine’s 1st congressional district, securing endorsements from EMILY’s List, the League of Conservation Voters, Planned Parenthood, the United Auto Workers, and several state officials. She won the Democratic primary with 43% of the vote and was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives on November 4, 2008, defeating Republican Charlie Summers 54.9% to 45.1%.
Democratic Era (2009–Present)
Pingree was sworn in to the U.S. House on January 3, 2009. She joined the Congressional Progressive Caucus soon after her election and currently serves as its vice chair. She has been easily reelected multiple times, defeating Republican challenger Dean Scontras 57% to 43% in 2010, Jonathan Courtney 64.8% to 35.2% in 2012, and other challengers by wide margins in 2014, 2016, 2018, 2020, 2022, and 2024.
She has been active on issues including prescription drug pricing, climate change, campaign finance reform, and foreign policy restraint. She voted for the impeachment of President Donald Trump on December 18, 2019, supported the Green New Deal resolution, and urged President Joe Biden to declare a national climate emergency.

In 2010, Pingree drew national attention after a video surfaced showing her disembarking from a private jet owned by her then-fiancé, hedge fund manager S. Donald Sussman, at Portland International Jetport, prompting criticism given her past statements about private aircraft use. The House Ethics Committee later ruled the travel permissible under House ethics rules. In 2001, she was inducted into the Maine Women’s Hall of Fame.

Personal Life
Pingree has three children. Her eldest, Hannah Pingree, formerly served as Speaker of the Maine House of Representatives and is a candidate for Governor of Maine in the 2026 election. Pingree married hedge fund manager S. Donald Sussman on June 18, 2011, in a private ceremony at their North Haven home. They separated in 2015 and divorced in the summer of 2016. Pingree and her daughter Hannah co-own the Nebo Lodge Inn & Restaurant on North Haven Island.
