Derrick Francis Van Orden (born September 15, 1969) is an American politician, actor, and retired United States Navy SEAL serving as the U.S. representative for Wisconsin’s 3rd congressional district since 2023. A member of the Republican Party, he previously spent 26 years in the United States Navy, retiring in 2014 as a Senior Chief Petty Officer after five combat deployments. He is also a former film actor and the owner-operator of a small Wisconsin café before entering electoral politics.
Early Life and Background
Derrick Francis Van Orden was born in Hennepin, Minnesota, on September 15, 1969. He grew up in the United States and later completed higher education through Excelsior University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree. His academic path coincided with the start of a long military career that would shape his public service identity.
Van Orden joined the United States Navy in 1988, when he was 18 years old. In 1992, he was selected for Basic Underwater Demolition/SEAL training, known as BUD/S, at Naval Amphibious Base Coronado in California. After months of demanding instruction, he graduated with BUD/S Class 184 in October 1992 and was assigned to SEAL Team FOUR at Naval Amphibious Base Little Creek in Virginia. Following advanced SEAL training and a six-month probationary period, he earned the Navy Enlisted Classification 5326 as a Combatant Swimmer (SEAL) and was authorized to wear the Special Warfare insignia.
Path to US Politics
Van Orden served on active duty for 26 years, retiring in 2014 as a Senior Chief Petty Officer after completing five combat deployments.
