Gus Michael Bilirakis (born February 8, 1963) is an American lawyer and politician serving as the U.S. representative for Florida’s 12th congressional district since 2013. A member of the Republican Party, he first entered Congress in 2007 after succeeding his father, Michael Bilirakis, and represented Florida’s 9th congressional district prior to redistricting. Bilirakis previously served in the Florida House of Representatives for the 48th district from 1998 to 2006. Raised in Tarpon Springs and a grandson of Greek immigrants, he has built a career around legal practice, veterans’ affairs, and Hellenic issues, while representing much of the northern Tampa Bay area.
Early Life and Background
Gus Michael Bilirakis was born in Gainesville, Florida, and grew up in Tarpon Springs, a coastal community with deep Greek-American roots. He is the son of Evelyn (née Miaoulis) and Michael Bilirakis, and the grandson of Greek immigrants. His grandfather owned a local bakery, where a young Bilirakis worked from an early age, giving him direct exposure to small-business life and the immigrant experience that shaped much of his later public service.
Bilirakis graduated from Tarpon Springs High School before continuing his studies at St. Petersburg Junior College. He went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts in political science from the University of Florida in 1986. He later received his Juris Doctor from Stetson University College of Law in 1989. During his college years, he served as an intern for U.S. President Ronald Reagan, an experience that reinforced his interest in public policy and government.
Path to US Politics
After law school, Bilirakis joined the family practice, taking over the Bilirakis Law Group from his father, Michael Bilirakis. The firm specialized in probate and estate planning, and Bilirakis also assisted his father with congressional campaign operations during the 24 years his father served in the U.S. House. In 1998, Bilirakis decided to run for the Florida House of Representatives, winning the District 48 seat that had been held for a decade by Republican Sandy Safley of Clearwater. His district covered most of north Pinellas County, part of Pasco County, and part of Hillsborough County. During his eight years in Tallahassee, he chaired panels on Crime Prevention, Public Safety Appropriations, and the Economic Development, Trade, & Banking Committee, building a record on law enforcement, budgeting, and economic policy that prepared him for a federal run.

Bilirakis’s first notable political victory came in 1998, when he won the Florida House District 48 seat. As his father’s congressional career drew to a close, Bilirakis helped manage Michael Bilirakis’s campaigns and prepared to pursue the seat himself. In 2006, after his father announced his retirement following 24 years in Congress, Gus Bilirakis entered the race for what was then Florida’s 9th Congressional District. He defeated Hillsborough County Commissioner Phyllis Busansky with 55 percent of the vote in the general election, becoming only the second person to hold the seat.
U.S. House of Representatives Breakthrough (2007–2012)
After his 2006 victory, Bilirakis was sworn into the U.S. House in January 2007, stepping into a district his family had represented for nearly a quarter-century. He was subsequently reelected three more times without substantive opposition, demonstrating durable support in the district. Since 2013, Bilirakis has served as the U.S. representative for Florida’s 12th congressional district. He is a member of the Republican Party’s Whip Team and serves as Chair of the Veterans’ Affairs Task Force for the Republican Policy Committee. He also co-chairs the Congressional Military Veterans Caucus and the Congressional Caucus on Hellenic Issues, reflecting his long-standing focus on service members and the Greek-American community.
On major legislative votes, Bilirakis has supported the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017, voted against the Emergency Economic Stabilization Act of 2008, and called for reevaluating the legal status of bump stocks after the 2017 Las Vegas shooting. In the wake of the 2018 Stoneman Douglas High School shooting, he said he was willing to consider gun control legislation and supported additional school resource officers. He voted to provide Israel with support following the October 7 attacks, and in 2020, he co-signed a letter to Secretary of State Mike Pompeo condemning Azerbaijan’s offensive operations against Nagorno-Karabakh and Turkey’s role in the conflict.
