Michael John Haridopolos (born March 15, 1970) is an American politician, consultant, and former educator serving as the U.S. representative for Florida’s 8th congressional district since 2025. A member of the Republican Party, he has spent more than two decades in public service, including twelve years in the Florida Legislature. Beyond politics, Haridopolos has worked as a college instructor, a lobbyist, and the founder of MJH Consulting.
Early Life and Background
Michael John Haridopolos was born on March 15, 1970, in Huntington, New York, to Ernest “Ernie” Adam Haridopolos and Georgia Haridopolos. His father was a Greek immigrant who served as an FBI agent and graduated from Adelphi College. Growing up in a household shaped by public service and immigrant experience gave Haridopolos an early awareness of civic duty that would later guide his career in government.
Haridopolos earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in history from Stetson University and later completed a Master of Arts degree in history at the University of Arkansas. These programs deepened his interest in American political history and helped lay the foundation for his later work as a college instructor and state legislator.
Path to US Politics
Before entering elected office, Haridopolos built a career in the classroom. He began teaching United States History and Political Science at Brevard Community College—now known as Eastern Florida State College—in 1993. Beginning in 2007, he also taught classes as an instructor at the Bob Graham Center at the University of Florida, where he shared his interest in political history with students.
His classroom work, combined with his growing involvement in Republican politics, prepared him for a run for office. In 2000, he entered the political arena by winning an open seat in the Florida House of Representatives, launching a legislative career that would eventually carry him to the U.S. Congress.

Haridopolos first won elected office in 2000, capturing an open seat in the Florida House of Representatives. He began his campaign by winning a six-way Republican primary with a margin of more than 30 percentage points, then secured the November general election with 65 percent of the vote.
Following legislative re-apportionment, Haridopolos won the 2002 Republican primary with more than 82 percent of the vote and was returned to the Florida House in the general election with 79 percent. His two strong victories in the House set the stage for his move to the state Senate in 2003.
Florida Senate Rise (2003–2012)
Haridopolos entered the Florida Senate in 2003 after State Senator Howard Futch died in January of that year and a special election was called. He won the Republican primary with 84 percent of the vote and the general election with 63 percent, completing the remaining four years of the term.
He was re-elected to the Florida Senate in both 2006 and 2010 without opposition, becoming a steady presence in the chamber. Haridopolos served as Majority Whip from 2006 to 2008 and, in 2009, was elected President of the Florida Senate. He was sworn in as Senate President on November 16, 2010, for a two-year term and presided over the largest Republican majority in the chamber, 28 to 12, since Reconstruction.
U.S. Senate Bid and Subsequent Career (2011–2024)
In 2011, Haridopolos entered the Republican primary to challenge incumbent U.S. Senator Bill Nelson. He attracted endorsements from former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee, U.S. Congressman Connie Mack, Florida CFO Jeff Atwater, and Agriculture Commissioner Adam Putnam. On July 18, 2011, however, he released a campaign video announcing that he would no longer seek the nomination, choosing instead to focus on his duties as President of the Florida Senate.
After leaving the Legislature, Haridopolos continued teaching at the University of Florida. In 2019, he co-authored The Modern Republican Party in Florida with Peter Dunbar, a book chronicling the rise of the Republican Party in Florida from the 1950s through the 2018 elections. He also founded and operates MJH Consulting and has worked as a lobbyist in Florida, while remaining active in the National Republican Senatorial Committee and the Republican Governors Association.
U.S. House of Representatives Era (2025–Present)
When incumbent Republican Bill Posey announced his retirement from Florida’s 8th congressional district in April 2024, Haridopolos quickly entered the race to succeed him and consolidated Republican support. He won the November 2024 election with 62 percent of the vote and was sworn into the 119th United States Congress on January 3, 2025.
