Mary Sheffield (born June 9, 1987) is an American politician serving as the 76th mayor of Detroit since January 2026. A member of the Democratic Party, she is the first woman to be elected mayor of Detroit. Before becoming mayor, Sheffield represented Detroit’s 5th district on the Detroit City Council from 2014 to 2026 and was elected council president in 2022, becoming the youngest person ever to hold that office. Early Life and Background
Mary Sheffield was born and raised on the west side of Detroit, Michigan. She is the daughter of Horace Sheffield III, a well-known civil rights activist and pastor of New Destiny Christian Fellowship Church. Growing up in a household shaped by community advocacy and faith, Sheffield was exposed early to issues affecting working families and underserved neighborhoods across the city.
She attended local schools in Detroit before going on to higher education. In 2008, Sheffield earned a bachelor’s degree in public affairs from Wayne State University. Path to US Politics
While attending college, Sheffield met Wayne County Sheriff Benny Napoleon, who recruited her to work in the county jail system as a disciplinary hearing officer.
