Shelley Berkley Bio
Shelley Berkley (née Rochelle Levine; born January 20, 1951) is an American businesswoman, politician, and attorney who has served as mayor of Las Vegas since December 4, 2024. A member of the Democratic Party, she represented Nevada’s 1st congressional district in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1999 to 2013. Earlier in her career, she served in the Nevada Assembly and on the Nevada System of Higher Education Board of Regents.
Before entering politics, Berkley built a career in Las Vegas as a practicing attorney for several casino companies and as a national director for the American Hotel-Motel Association. Between her time in Congress and her election as mayor, she held senior leadership roles with the Touro University System, focusing on higher education and health care.

Rochelle Levine was born in New York City on January 20, 1951, the daughter of Estelle (née Colonomos) and George Levine. Her paternal grandparents were Russian Jews, and her mother’s family were Sephardic Jews with roots in Ottoman-era Thessaloniki. She grew up in a household shaped by immigrant traditions and a strong emphasis on education and civic engagement.
In 1964, Berkley moved with her family to Las Vegas, Nevada, when she was a junior high school student. She attended Fremont Junior High School and Valley High School, graduating before becoming the first member of her family to attend college. Path to US Politics
Berkley enrolled at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV), where she joined Delta Zeta sorority and was elected student body president of the Consolidated Students of UNLV during her senior year. She graduated with honors in 1972 with a Bachelor of Arts in political science, gaining early experience in campus leadership and political organizing.
She then earned a Juris Doctor degree in 1976 from the University of San Diego School of Law and returned to Las Vegas to begin her professional career. She placed first in the nonpartisan primary in June 2024 with 35.7 percent of the vote and went on to win the November runoff against City Councilmember Victoria Seaman with 53.2 percent.
