    Michael Flynn Bio

Michael Thomas Flynn (born 24 December 1958) is a retired United States Army lieutenant general, intelligence officer, and political adviser who briefly served as the 24th U.S. National Security Advisor in January–February 2017. Flynn had a long military career with senior intelligence roles—including director of the Defense Intelligence Agency—before his forced retirement in 2014. After leaving the military he founded a consulting firm and became a prominent adviser to Donald Trump’s 2016 campaign. Flynn resigned as National Security Advisor after reports he had misled officials about contacts with the Russian ambassador and later pled guilty to making false statements to the FBI; those charges were ultimately dismissed and he received a presidential pardon. Since 2020 he has been an active and polarizing figure in conservative political and media circles.

    Early Life and Background

Michael Thomas Flynn was born and raised in Middletown, Rhode Island, one of nine siblings born to Helen Frances (née Andrews), who worked in real estate, and Charles Francis Flynn, a small-town banker, both Catholics of Irish descent. Flynn’s family has a long tradition of serving in the armed forces; Helen’s brother was a Navy submarine captain, Charles’s father served in the Army during World War I, and Charles himself served in World War II and fought during the Battle of the Bulge while traveling under General George S. Patton. Flynn’s younger brother, Charles A. Flynn, is a retired four-star general.

On 24 July 1972, after a local girl accidentally released a parking brake on a car, Flynn and a friend rushed to save two toddlers in its path, an act for which he was honored by the local town council. Flynn served time in juvenile detention for what he has described as “serious and unlawful activity” in his youth, the records of which were expunged after he served a year of supervised probation. While at Middletown High School, Flynn met Lori Andrade, daughter of a prominent Portuguese family on Aquidneck Island, whom he married in 1981.

He attended the University of Rhode Island, where he initially struggled academically before earning a three-year scholarship from the Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC) and ultimately graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in management science in 1981 as a Distinguished Military Graduate. Flynn later earned a Master of Business Administration in Telecommunications from Golden Gate University, a Master of Military Art and Science from the United States Army Command and General Staff College, and a Master of Arts in National Security and Strategic Studies from the Naval War College. He is also a graduate of Ranger School, the Military Intelligence Officer Basic and Advanced Courses, and the School of Advanced Military Studies.

    Path to US Politics

Flynn’s entry into political life came after a 33-year military career that ended with his retirement from the U.S. Army on 7 August 2014. Following his departure from the Defense Intelligence Agency, where he had served as the 18th director, he founded the Flynn Intel Group in October 2014, providing intelligence consulting to businesses and governments. The firm paid him to advise on counterterrorism, speak at events, and brief clients on overseas risk.

In December 2015, Flynn was paid $45,000 to deliver a speech in Moscow at the ten-year anniversary celebration of RT, a Russian state-controlled international television network, where he sat next to Russian President Vladimir Putin at the banquet table. This appearance, along with a paid op-ed and consulting contracts linked to the Turkish government, drew scrutiny and shaped his transition into the political sphere.

In February 2016, Flynn became a national security advisor to Donald Trump for the 2016 presidential campaign and was a headlining speaker during the first night of the 2016 Republican National Convention. By the end of that year he had fully shifted from military and consulting work into partisan political advising, setting the stage for his eventual nomination as National Security Advisor.

    Michael Flynn Career

    Early Career (1981–2001)

Flynn was commissioned in the U.S. Army as a second lieutenant in military intelligence in 1981 and completed multiple tours at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, with the 82nd Airborne Division, XVIII Airborne Corps, and Joint Special Operations Command. He deployed for the invasion of Grenada in 1983, where he once leapt off a 40-foot cliff to retrieve two soldiers stranded in the ocean, earning both a reprimand for his unauthorized actions and the respect of fellow soldiers. He also served with the 25th Infantry Division in Hawaii, the Joint Readiness Training Center in Louisiana, and the Army Intelligence Center at Fort Huachuca, Arizona.

By June 2001, Flynn had risen to serve as the assistant chief of staff, G2, for the XVIII Airborne Corps at Fort Bragg, and shortly afterward became the director of intelligence at Joint Task Force 180 in Afghanistan. His early career established a pattern of joint special operations intelligence work that would define his later leadership roles in counterterrorism.

    Senior Intelligence Roles (2002–2014)

Flynn commanded the 111th Military Intelligence Brigade from June 2002 to June 2004 and was the director of intelligence for Joint Special Operations Command from July 2004 to June 2007, with service in Afghanistan and Iraq. Working alongside General Stanley McChrystal, he helped streamline intelligence to accelerate operations and degrade the networks of Al-Qaeda in Iraq.

He went on to serve as the director of intelligence of United States Central Command (2007–2008), the Joint Staff (2008–2009), and the International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan (2009–2010). In September 2011, Flynn was promoted to Lieutenant General and assigned as assistant director of national intelligence. President Barack Obama nominated him in April 2012 to be the 18th director of the Defense Intelligence Agency, and he took command in July 2012, simultaneously becoming commander of the Joint Functional Component Command for Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconfusion.

Flynn’s tenure at the DIA ended acrimoniously. In mid-2014 his two-year term was not extended amid reports of a chaotic management style and insubordination; on 30 April 2014 he announced his retirement effective later that year. He was reportedly forced out after clashing with superiors, and a leaked email from former Secretary of State Colin Powell noted that Flynn had been described as “abusive with staff, didn’t listen, worked against policy.” Flynn officially retired from the U.S. Army with 33 years of service on 7 August 2014.

    Consulting and Campaign Years (2014–2017)

After leaving the military, Flynn founded the Flynn Intel Group in October 2014, which provided intelligence services for businesses and governments, including in Turkey. The firm closed in 2016. While consulting, Flynn sat in on classified national security briefings with then-candidate Trump at the same time he was working for foreign clients, which raised conflict-of-interest concerns.

In February 2016, Flynn became a national security advisor to Trump for the 2016 presidential campaign. By the end of September 2016, his consulting company was hired by Inovo BV, a firm owned by Kamil Ekim Alptekin, the chair of the Turkish-American Business Council, and Flynn was paid $530,000 for lobbying work. On 8 November 2016, an op-ed by Flynn was published in The Hill calling for U.S. backing for the Turkish government; The Hill later added a note stating that Flynn had failed to disclose his consulting work for a company with close ties to the Turkish government.

On 22 January 2017, Flynn was sworn in as the 24th U.S. National Security Advisor. On 13 February 2017, he resigned after information surfaced that he had misled Vice President Mike Pence and others about the nature and content of his communications with Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak. Flynn’s 24-day tenure as National Security Advisor remains the shortest in the 63-year history of the office.

    Legal Battles and Pardon (2017–2020)

In March 2017, Flynn retroactively registered as a foreign agent, acknowledging that in 2016 he had conducted paid lobbying work that may have benefited Turkey’s government. In December 2017, he formalized a deal with Special Counsel Robert Mueller to plead guilty to a felony count of making false statements to the FBI about his Kislyak communications and agreed to cooperate with the investigation.

In June 2019, Flynn dismissed his attorneys and retained Sidney Powell, who sought assistance from Attorney General Bill Barr in exonerating him. In January 2020, two weeks before his scheduled sentencing, Flynn moved to withdraw his guilty plea. At Barr’s direction, the Justice Department filed a court motion to drop all charges on 7 May 2020. Presiding Judge Emmet Sullivan placed the matter on hold to solicit amicus curiae briefs, and the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals later denied Powell’s request to compel dismissal.

On 25 November 2020, Flynn was issued a presidential pardon by Donald Trump. On 8 December 2020, Judge Sullivan dismissed the criminal case against Flynn, while stating that he likely would have denied the Justice Department’s motion to drop the case.
