Rebecca Michelle “Mikie” Sherrill, born on January 19, 1972, is an American politician, former naval officer, and former federal prosecutor who serves as the 57th governor of New Jersey. A member of the Democratic Party, she was elected governor in 2025 and sworn into office on January 20, 2026. Before becoming governor, Sherrill represented New Jersey’s 11th congressional district in the U.S. House of Representatives from 2019 until her resignation in November 2025. She is the second woman to serve as governor of New Jersey, the first Democratic woman in the role, and the first female military veteran elected governor of any U.S. state.
Early Life and Background
Rebecca Michelle Sherrill was born in Alexandria, Virginia, and grew up in several places along the East Coast of the United States because of her father’s job. As a child, she was inspired by her grandfather, who served as a pilot during World War II, and she dreamed of becoming a pilot herself from an early age.
