Emma Heming Willis recently spoke about the difficult but necessary decision to relocate her husband, Bruce Willis, to a specialized care home last September as he manages frontotemporal dementia. The move, she revealed, has brought much-needed stability not only for Bruce but for their entire family. Emma highlighted that Bruce’s new residence is conveniently close to her own, allowing her to visit him regularly.
Family Life Continues with Frequent Visits and Supportive Environment
Emma shared that she and Bruce, who are parents to daughters Mabel Ray, 15, and Evelyn Penn, 11, maintain close family ties with multiple visits each week. Their routine includes shared meals such as family dinners and breakfasts. The care home is fully staffed to address Bruce’s needs around the clock, which has given him a more supportive and comfortable living situation compared to previous arrangements.
Emma described the care home as “our second home,” emphasizing how it allows Bruce to receive professional care continuously while giving their children space to experience a more typical childhood.
Positive Outcomes and Challenges of the Transition
Although the decision to move Bruce was one of the hardest moments in their journey, Emma stated that since relocating, Bruce has been thriving. She acknowledged the emotional weight such choices carry for caregivers, who often must balance the wellbeing of their loved ones with that of the family as a whole. Emma stressed that keeping Bruce at home had begun to negatively impact their daughters’ social lives and overall family normalcy.

The decision didn’t come lightly, but it was the right one for our family,
Emma said.
Our children are thriving, and so is Bruce.
Regaining Relationship Balance and Reducing Family Stress
In a prior interview with The Sunday Times, Emma revealed that moving Bruce to specialized care allowed her to reconnect as his wife, rather than solely as his caregiver, a change she called “such a gift.” The new living arrangement has also empowered Bruce to enjoy time with friends and family without the pressures of hosting or managing his care at home, helping to reduce Emma’s own stress and anxiety.
Understanding Bruce Willis’ Condition and Coping with Anosognosia
Emma further explained during the Conversations With Cam podcast that Bruce experiences anosognosia, a neurological disorder where a person is unaware of their own illness. While this makes managing dementia more complex, she views it as a mixed blessing. Despite these medical challenges, Emma is committed to focusing on joy and preserving family traditions.
Maintaining Joy and Family Traditions Amidst Dementia
At the End Well 2025 conference in November, Emma spoke about how the family continues to celebrate meaningful moments such as holidays, even though their experiences have changed. She emphasized the importance of embracing life’s ongoing moments and finding happiness in new ways.
Life goes on,
she remarked, adding,
there is still joy in it.
