Almost six years have passed since Armor Wars was initially announced as a Disney+ series, with Yassir Lester named Head Writer in August 2021. However, numerous setbacks delayed progress, leading to a September 2022 announcement that the project was being redeveloped into a movie instead. Despite connections to events like Spider-Man: No Way Home and Secret Invasion, which seemed to pave the way for War Machine’s continuing story and a conflict involving Stark Industries and the Department of Damage Control, the project has largely stalled since then.
Challenges for Armor Wars and Audience Expectations
Although War Machine remains a popular figure in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, there appears to be limited enthusiasm for Armor Wars itself. While other characters such as Ironheart and Justin Hammer could be introduced to enrich the story, the enormous popularity of the Iron Man trilogy suggests that fans strongly favor Tony Stark’s presence. This preference contributes to uncertainty about whether Armor Wars can attract a substantial audience without Iron Man featured prominently.
Sam Rockwell’s Comments on Armor Wars and Possible Return
In an interview with ScreenRant, Sam Rockwell, who played Justin Hammer in Iron Man 2 and has expressed interest in reprising the role, was questioned about teaming up again with his White Lotus co-star Walton Goggins for Armor Wars. Goggins portrayed Sonny Burch, a villain from Ant-Man and The Wasp, speculated to have links to Hammer, though the character has not reappeared since.
Oh Armor Wars. Oh, you mean the Marvel thing? Is that being made?
Sam Rockwell remarked.
Walt and I could team up like bad guys, that kind of thing. It’s definitely a fun character. It’d be fun to play either that or a supervillain. It’d be great.
Uncertainty Surrounding the Project’s Future
Following the events of Secret Wars, there is speculation that Marvel Studios might cast a new Iron Man, which could potentially reignite interest in Armor Wars. When actor Don Cheadle asked Rockwell about Armor Wars’ status in October 2024, Rockwell replied with uncertainty.
You can find out and let me know. [Laughs] I don’t know, I’m not sure where anything is right now. I think things are going through a lot of changes, and we’ll see what happens, we’ll see what it is.

Marvel Studios’ Strategic Approach to Armor Wars
Nate Moore, executive producer of Captain America: Brave New World, provided insight into Marvel Studios’ approach to their current projects, including Armor Wars.
As Marvel [Studios] continues to go through this phase, we want to make sure whatever we’re making is awesome. So that means we had to slow down some things that were on the front burner.
It doesn’t mean we’ll never make it, but it does mean we just have to be a little bit more considered so that every time out, audiences are guaranteed quality.

What Lies Ahead for Armor Wars
The direction forward for Armor Wars may depend heavily on featuring Iron Man, which Marvel Studios might have recognized in light of the project’s shifting priority. Putting Tony Stark at the center could enhance the story’s appeal when and if production resumes. For now, Marvel appears to be taking a cautious approach, focusing on quality and strategic timing to meet audience expectations.
