Christian Bale transformed into Frankenstein’s monster for Maggie Gyllenhaal’s film The Bride!, undergoing six hours of makeup each day on set, which led him to scream daily as a way to cope. The film, set to premiere on March 6, features Bale as the resurrected creature alongside Jessie Buckley, who plays his partner in this reimagined gothic tale.
To embody his character Frank, Bale developed a unique ritual to help manage the lengthy and physically demanding transformation process. He revealed that the intense makeup routine required him to release the overwhelming frustration and despair that built up while remaining still for hours. This daily screaming was not done in isolation; instead, it became a shared experience with his fellow cast and crew.
“I would scream like crazy, every day,”
Bale stated in an interview with Entertainment Weekly. He further explained the reasons behind his unusual practice, sharing,
“Just to [release the] despair, all of that restraint that you have to display when you’re sitting still for that long,”
highlighting the emotional and physical toll of sitting through intense makeup sessions.
Bale avoided screaming during his commute or by himself, concerned about causing accidents or being perceived as unwell. Instead, the set of The Bride! became a place where this emotional release was embraced collectively. He described how the entire crew soon joined in, with many employees running to the makeup trailer to participate in these moments of cathartic shouting.

“I didn’t want to do it driving into work because I thought I might cause a crash. And I didn’t want to do it by myself because I thought everyone would just think I’m going nuts,”
Bale admitted, continuing,
“The whole crew got involved by the end, because people would hear us screaming.”
The cast and crew’s shared intensity highlighted the emotional atmosphere on set, with Jessie Buckley describing their dynamic as highly charged. She likened their performances to two greyhounds let loose, emphasizing the thrill and exhaustion the roles demanded.
“We both were two greyhounds that were just let out of their kennels, and it was really, really thrilling,”
Buckley said. She added,
“It was really probably the most intense, exhausting shoot of my life, but it was so fun.”
The Film’s Ensemble Cast and Artistic Influences
Maggie Gyllenhaal’s The Bride! stars not only Christian Bale and Jessie Buckley but also includes notable talents such as Peter Sarsgaard, Jake Gyllenhaal, Annette Bening, Penélope Cruz, and Julianne Hough. The film offers a highly stylized retelling of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein lore, blending horror with fantasy elements.
Gyllenhaal acknowledged the timing of her project coinciding with Guillermo del Toro’s own take on the Frankenstein story. Although both filmmakers explored similar thematic territory, they approached the subject matter in distinctly different ways, a fact that Gyllenhaal found creatively “cool.”
“How cool that Guillermo del Toro and I just randomly, at the same moment, are thinking about somewhat similar things? And, as it turns out, in extremely different ways,”
said Gyllenhaal, who also stars in and directed the film herself.
In addition to The Bride!, Christian Bale has the biopic Madden in his upcoming schedule, starring alongside Nicolas Cage, further demonstrating his wide-ranging acting commitments.
Shared Intensity Brings Energy to The Bride’s Production
The demanding physical and emotional work required for Bale’s transformation into Frank fostered a collaborative spirit on set. The ritual of screaming not only helped Bale maintain his mental focus but also bonded the actors and crew, allowing them to release tension together during the challenging shoot.
This immersive environment contributed to the film’s raw and intense atmosphere, adding depth to the portrayal of the “undead” couple brought to life by Bale and Buckley. Their performances, fueled by shared exhaustion and exhilaration, are expected to resonate with audiences when the movie opens in theaters.
