Jonathan Edward Bernthal, known professionally as Jon Bernthal, is an American actor whose career has spanned theater, film, and television since 2002. He first gained widespread attention for his portrayal of Shane Walsh on the AMC horror drama series The Walking Dead between 2010 and 2012, and later achieved international recognition for his role as Frank Castle in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, beginning with the second season of Daredevil in 2016 and continuing through his own spin-off series The Punisher. Jonathan Edward Bernthal was born on September 20, 1976, in Washington, D.C., and grew up in Cabin John, Maryland, in a Jewish family. He is the son of Joan Lurie Bernthal and Eric Lawrence “Rick” Bernthal, a former lawyer with Latham and Watkins who also served as chair of the board of directors for The Humane Society of the United States until 2019. His paternal grandfather, Murray Bernthal, was a musician and producer, and he has two brothers, Nicholas and Thomas, the latter of whom is married to former Facebook chief operating officer Sheryl Sandberg. The three brothers are also cousins of the late rock musician Adam Schlesinger.
Bernthal attended the Sidwell Friends School in Washington, D.C., graduating in 1995, and has often described his younger self as a troublemaker. After high school, he studied at Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, New York, but later dropped out. On the advice of his acting teacher, Alma Becker, he joined the Moscow Art Theatre School in Russia, where he also spent time as a catcher for a Russian professional baseball team.

Bernthal was discovered while at the Moscow Art Theatre by the executive director of Harvard University’s Institute for Advanced Theater Training at the American Repertory Theater in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and he completed his graduate studies there in 2002. Jon Bernthal and his family live in Ojai, California, where he is also an advocate of pit bull ownership and serves as a spokesperson for the Animal Farm Foundation, an organization that rescues and promotes the equal treatment of pit bulls. He owns three pit bulls, two of whom, Boss and Venice, made appearances in his 2012 film Rampart.
