Normani Bio

Normani Kordei Hamilton, known professionally as Normani, is an American singer, dancer, and actress. She first rose to international fame as a member of Fifth Harmony, one of the best-selling girl groups of all time, before launching a solo career in 2018. Her duet with Khalid, “Love Lies,” marked her arrival as a solo force, while follow-up tracks “Dancing with a Stranger,” “Motivation,” and “Wild Side” cemented her reputation for choreography-driven pop and R&B. Her debut studio album, Dopamine, arrived in 2024 after years of anticipation.

Beyond music, Normani has expanded into television and film, competing on Dancing with the Stars, advising on The Voice, and making her feature film debut in Freaky Tales. She has been recognized with honors ranging from MTV Video Music Awards to BMI Awards, and continues to be cited as a style and dance icon.

Early Life and Background

Normani Kordei Hamilton was born in Atlanta, Georgia, on May 31, 1996, to Derrick Hamilton and Andrea Hamilton. She has two older half sisters, Ashlee and Arielle. After her birth, the family relocated to New Orleans, Louisiana, where she spent her early childhood immersed in Southern culture, food, and music traditions.

Her life shifted dramatically in 2005 when Hurricane Katrina forced the family to move to Houston, Texas. The upheaval shaped her resilience and introduced her to new creative outlets. From the age of three, Normani competed in dance, gymnastics, and beauty pageants, sharpening the performance instincts that would later define her career. She attended private school as a child and was homeschooled from sixth grade onward.

Throughout her childhood, Normani and her mother traveled between Houston and Los Angeles for acting, singing, and dance auditions. She recorded her first song at age 13 and appeared in a small role on the HBO series Treme. Normani has often said that dancing was her first passion, and her early years laid the foundation for the discipline and stage confidence she is now known for.

Path to Music

Normani’s official entry into the music industry came in 2012, when she auditioned for the second season of The X Factor USA with a performance of Aretha Franklin’s “Chain of Fools.” Although she was cut during boot camp, the judges invited her back to form a group with Ally Brooke, Lauren Jauregui, Dinah Jane, and Camila Cabello. The newly assembled group, later named Fifth Harmony, finished the competition in third place and quickly earned a record deal.

With Fifth Harmony, Normani became one of the most visible members, eventually serving as the quartet’s de facto leader after Camila Cabello’s departure in late 2016. The group released two RIAA-certified albums, Reflection and 7/27, and a self-titled record, spawning hits like “Worth It” and “Work from Home.” Time magazine referred to Fifth Harmony as arguably the biggest girl group in the world at the height of their success.

While touring with the group, Normani used breaks to release solo cover videos and original dance content on YouTube, building a personal fan base. In 2017, she signed with S10 Entertainment as a solo artist, and the firm later partnered with Roc Nation to manage her career. By the time Fifth Harmony announced an indefinite hiatus in March 2018, Normani was ready to step forward as a solo act.

Normani Career

Early Career (2012-2018)

Normani’s first major work outside of Fifth Harmony came when she competed on season 24 of Dancing with the Stars in 2017, partnered with professional dancer Valentin Chmerkovskiy. They advanced to the finals and finished in third place, exposing her to a broader television audience and showcasing her dance ability beyond the stage.

In early 2018, she released “Love Lies” with Khalid for the Love, Simon soundtrack. The track peaked at number nine on the Billboard Hot 100 and spent 45 weeks on the Mainstream Top 40 chart, tying a record previously held by Dua Lipa’s “New Rules.” It became the most-streamed song ever by a female artist on Spotify in South Africa, and former U.S. President Barack Obama placed it on his 2019 year-end favorites list.

Breakthrough (2018-2021)

April 2018 marked a turning point when Normani became the first artist to sign with Keep Cool/RCA Records ahead of her debut solo album. That October, she and Calvin Harris released the Normani x Calvin Harris EP, featuring the songs “Checklist” and “Slow Down.” She followed it with the single “Waves” featuring 6lack, whose music video won the MTV Video Music Award for Best R&B Video.

January 2019 brought the global hit “Dancing with a Stranger” with Sam Smith. The song peaked at number three in the United Kingdom and number seven in the United States, reached number one on the Adult Top 40 chart, and earned Normani a Brit Award nomination for Song of the Year. One year into her solo career, she became the fastest solo artist without an album to surpass one billion combined streams on Spotify.

Later in 2019, she released “Motivation,” her first single without a featured artist, which drew widespread critical acclaim for its choreography. She performed at major events including Lollapalooza, served as an advisor on The Voice, and became the first brand ambassador of Savage X Fenty. She collaborated with Ariana Grande and Nicki Minaj on “Bad to You” for the Charlie’s Angels soundtrack, and with Megan Thee Stallion on “Diamonds” for the Birds of Prey soundtrack.

Recent Work and Beyond (2021-Present)

Normani’s July 2021 single “Wild Side,” featuring Cardi B, peaked at number 14 on the Billboard Hot 100 and topped the Mainstream R&B/Hip-Hop chart. The accompanying video, praised for its choreography, won Best Dance Performance at the 2021 BET Soul Train Music Awards. She also starred in the 2022 Pirelli Calendar and partnered with Steve Madden for a revival of their 1990s “Big Head Girls” campaign.

After years of teasing, Normani released her debut studio album Dopamine on June 14, 2024. The album featured the singles “1:59” featuring Gunna, “Candy Paint,” and the previously released “Wild Side.” It received a mixed-to-positive reception, selling 12,000 album-equivalent units in its first week. In 2025, she appeared on a remix of Ciara’s “Ecstasy” alongside Teyana Taylor, and launched her own fashion brand in partnership with Shein.
