Ruben Studdard Bio

Christopher Theodore Ruben Studdard, known professionally as Ruben Studdard, is an American singer and actor born on September 12, 1978, in Frankfurt, West Germany, while his father was stationed there with the United States Army. Raised in Birmingham, Alabama, he became a household name in 2003 when he won the second season of American Idol, beating runner-up Clay Aiken by a narrow margin. Nicknamed the Velvet Teddy Bear for his smooth vocals and warm stage presence, Studdard has built a two-decade recording career spanning R&B, pop, and gospel, while also finding a second home on the musical theatre stage.

Early Life and Background

Studdard was born in Frankfurt, West Germany, to American parents and raised in Birmingham, Alabama, the youngest son of two teachers. At the age of three, he sang for the first time at Rising Star Baptist Church in his hometown and continued to perform gospel solos throughout his childhood while his mother sang in the local choir. He grew up listening to his mother’s Donny Hathaway albums, Fred Hammond, and gospel music, influences that would later shape his warm vocal style.

He attended Huffman High School in Birmingham, where he played football and earned a scholarship to Alabama A&M University. At Alabama A&M, Studdard majored in voice studies and joined the Omicron Delta chapter of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, the men’s music fraternity of North America. He sang with a popular local Birmingham jazz and R&B band called Just a Few Cats, an experience that sharpened his live performance skills and prepared him for a professional music career.

Path to Singing

While still a college student, Studdard spent years making demo recordings and working to break into the music business. A backup singer from Just a Few Cats eventually invited him to accompany her to Nashville, Tennessee, for an audition on the second season of American Idol. At the audition, he performed Stevie Wonder’s Ribbon in the Sky, immediately impressing the judges and setting the stage for his national breakthrough.

On the televised competition in 2003, Studdard won over viewers with renditions of Superstar, the Leon Russell and Bonnie Bramlett classic, and A Whole New World, the Peabo Bryson and Regina Belle duet. He received praise from music legends such as Lionel Richie, Neil Sedaka, Robin Gibb, Luther Vandross, and Gladys Knight, and gained the lasting nickname Velvet Teddy Bear. He won the contest over runner-up Clay Aiken by only 134,000 votes out of 24 million cast in the May 2003 finale, and Alabama Governor Bob Riley declared March 11, 2003, Ruben Studdard Day.

He supported the album with the Always and Forever national tour.

In December 2018, Studdard made his Broadway debut alongside Clay Aiken in Ruben and Clay’s First Annual Christmas Carol Family Fun Pageant Spectacular Reunion Show at the Imperial Theatre, with a portion of ticket sales benefitting the National Inclusion Project.
