Thomas Haden Church (born Thomas Richard McMillen on June 17, 1960) is an American actor and director whose career has stretched from network television in the early 1990s to streaming series in the 2020s. He first became widely known as the slow-witted aircraft mechanic Lowell Mather on the NBC sitcom Wings (1990–1995) and later starred opposite Debra Messing on the comedy Ned & Stacey (1995–1997). Church earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor for his performance in the independent film Sideways (2004) and later won a Primetime Emmy Award for his work on the miniseries Broken Trail (2006).

Thomas Haden Church was born Thomas Richard McMillen on June 17, 1960, in Woodland, Yolo County, California. He is the son of Maxine Sanders McMillen (1936–2021) and Carlos "Carl" Richard McMillen (1936–2008), a Marine who served on active duty at the end of the Korean War and later worked as a surveyor. After his parents divorced, Church and his mother moved to Laredo, Texas, where she remarried in 1969 to widower George A. Quesada, a veteran of an Army Air Forces reconnaissance unit that served in Guam during World War II.

Church briefly took his stepfather’s surname but later changed it to "Haden Church," drawn from the names of other relatives, because people found Quesada difficult to pronounce. He grew up hunting along the Rio Grande Valley with his stepfather and friends, and began working on a ranch in Webb County, Texas, when he was 13. He left high school in 1977 to work in the oil fields of Louisiana, returned to graduate from Harlingen High School in 1979, and later attended the University of North Texas while living in Dallas.
