Todd Young Bio
Todd Christopher Young is an American politician and attorney serving as the senior United States senator from Indiana. A member of the Republican Party, he has held the seat since January 2017. Before joining the Senate, he represented Indiana’s 9th congressional district in the U.S. House of Representatives. He is also a former Marine Corps intelligence officer and a graduate of the United States Naval Academy.
Elected to the Senate in November 2016 to succeed retiring Republican Dan Coats, Young became Indiana’s senior senator in January 2019. From 2019 to 2021, he chaired the National Republican Senatorial Committee, the campaign arm of Senate Republicans. He won reelection in 2022, defeating Democratic nominee Thomas McDermott Jr. by a wide margin.
Early Life and Background
Todd Christopher Young was born on August 24, 1972, in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. He was the second of three children of Bruce H. Young and Nancy R. Young, née Pierce. When he was young, his family relocated to Indiana, where he lived in Marion County before settling in Hamilton County.
In Hamilton County, Young attended public schools and played competitive soccer, eventually helping his team win an Indiana state soccer championship. In 1990, he graduated from Carmel High School in Carmel, Indiana, where his academic and athletic record helped open the door to a military education.
Path to US Politics
After high school, Young enlisted in the United States Navy and reported for duty in Newport, Rhode Island. In May 1991, he received an appointment from the Secretary of the Navy to attend the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. At Annapolis, his classmates elected him a class officer, and he earned a varsity letter on Navy’s NCAA Division I soccer team. He graduated cum laude in 1995 with a Bachelor of Science degree in political science and accepted a commission in the United States Marine Corps.
Following his commissioning, Young trained at the Basic School in Quantico, Virginia, and completed the Naval Intelligence Officer Basic Course at Dam Neck, Virginia. He then led the intelligence department of VMU-2, an unmanned aerial vehicle squadron based in Cherry Point, North Carolina. He was honorably discharged from active duty in 2000 as a Marine Captain.

Post-Military Career (2000–2010)
After leaving the Marine Corps, Young spent a year in London attending the University of London’s Institute of United States Studies, where he wrote a thesis on the economic history of Midwestern agriculture and earned a Master of Arts in American politics. He later completed an executive education program at the Leipzig Graduate School of Management in eastern Germany, studying the transition from centrally planned economies to free markets.
In 2001, Young moved to Washington, D.C., where he worked briefly at The Heritage Foundation before becoming a staff member for U.S. Senator Richard Lugar of Indiana. He earned a Juris Doctor from the Indiana University Robert H. McKinney School of Law in 2006, serving as president of the school’s Federalist Society chapter, and joined the law firm Tucker and Tucker, P.C., in Paoli, Indiana. In 2007, he founded a fiscal responsibility advocacy group called the National Organization for People vs. Irresponsible Government Spending.
U.S. House of Representatives (2011–2017)
On January 26, 2009, Young announced his candidacy for the U.S. House seat in Indiana’s 9th congressional district. He won the Republican primary and defeated incumbent Democrat Baron Hill in the general election, taking office in January 2011 as part of the 112th Congress.
During his time in the House, Young served on the House Budget Committee and the House Armed Services Committee, where he focused on seapower, electronic warfare, and military grand strategy. He was reelected twice, defeating Shelli Yoder in 2012 with 55 percent of the vote and Bill Bailey in 2014 with 62 percent. In 2013, the National Journal gave him an overall composite rating of 69 percent conservative and 31 percent liberal.
U.S. Senate Era (2017–Present)
Rather than seek another House term, Young announced his candidacy for the Republican nomination for the 2016 Senate race to succeed Dan Coats. After prevailing in a contested primary against U.S. Representative Marlin Stutzman, he defeated former U.S. Senator Evan Bayh in the November 2016 general election, winning 52 percent of the vote to Bayh’s 42 percent. He was sworn in on January 3, 2017, by Vice President Joe Biden.
In his first Senate term, Young was ranked the ninth-most bipartisan senator in the first session of the 115th Congress by the Bipartisan Index, and GovTrack noted that he joined more bipartisan bills than any other freshman senator. He chaired the National Republican Senatorial Committee from 2019 to 2021. In 2005, Young married Jennifer Tucker, the niece of former Vice President Dan Quayle. The couple has four children. He is a Protestant.
