Scott Bessent Bio
Scott Kenneth Homer Bessent (born August 21, 1962) is an American businessman, investor, and government official who has served since January 2025 as the 79th United States Secretary of the Treasury. A graduate of Yale University, Bessent built his career on Wall Street, most notably as a longtime partner and chief investment officer at Soros Fund Management and as the founder of the global macro hedge fund Key Square Group. He is the first openly gay person to lead the U.S. Treasury Department and the first openly gay Senate-confirmed Cabinet member in a Republican administration.
Before entering government, Bessent became widely known for several large, profitable trades, including Soros Fund Management’s 1992 Black Wednesday position and a 2013 bet against the Japanese yen. A Republican donor and economic adviser, he joined Donald Trump’s 2024 presidential campaign as a key policy figure before being nominated to lead the Treasury Department in the second Trump administration.
Early Life and Background
Scott Kenneth Homer Bessent was born on August 21, 1962, in Conway, South Carolina, to Barbara (née McLeod) and Homer Gaston Bessent Jr. The Bessent family is of French Huguenot and Scottish descent, and at times identified with the Baptist faith. His father founded and owned one of the Grand Strand’s early real estate companies, while his mother was a local businesswoman who ran the family business during her husband’s illness, an unusual role for a woman in that era. His uncle was John Jenrette, a former United States Representative whose later legal troubles became well known.
Bessent held his first job as a busboy at the age of nine, an experience he has cited as formative. In 1980, he graduated from North Myrtle Beach High School in Little River, South Carolina. He briefly considered applying to the United States Naval Academy but decided against it because he was unwilling to conceal his sexual orientation during the admissions process.
At Yale University, Bessent earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science in 1984. He was active on campus, serving on the board of the Yale Daily News, acting as president of the Wolf’s Head Society, and working as class treasurer. He also chaired the 1984 Yale Alumni Fund and served as an assistant to the director of athletics. As an undergraduate, he interned with investor Jim Rogers, a co-founder of the Quantum Fund, after meeting him at a Yale career center event.
Path to US Politics
Bessent’s entry into political life began with fundraising and donations. In 2000, he hosted a fundraiser for Democratic presidential candidate Al Gore at his East Hampton, New York, home and contributed to John McCain’s campaign that same year. He later donated to Barack Obama’s 2007 presidential campaign and to Hillary Clinton’s 2013 political efforts, reflecting an earlier period of Democratic engagement.
His political alignment shifted during the late 2010s. After Donald Trump was elected president in 2016, Bessent contributed $1 million to Trump’s inaugural committee. In 2023 and 2024, he donated more than $1 million to Trump’s 2024 presidential campaign. He also hosted two major fundraisers, one in Greenville, South Carolina, that raised nearly $7 million, and another in Palm Beach, Florida, that raised $50 million for the campaign. By July 2024, he was serving as a key economic adviser to the Trump campaign.
Scott Bessent Career
Early Career (1984–1991)
After graduating from Yale, Bessent worked at the investment bank Brown Brothers Harriman, the Riyadh-based Olayan Group, and the hedge fund Kynikos Associates under short seller Jim Chanos. His work with Chanos, whose clients included George Soros, helped open the door to Soros Fund Management. By 1991, Bessent had joined Soros Fund Management, where he would rise to lead the firm’s London office.
During the early 1990s, Bessent established himself as a rising figure in global macro investing. His analytical approach, combining geopolitics with macroeconomic trends, became a hallmark of his later work and laid the foundation for the trading strategies he would later employ.
Soros Fund Management Breakthrough (1991–2015)
Bessent joined Soros Fund Management in 1991 and was promoted to head the firm’s London office. In September 1992, he was a leading member of the Soros team whose bet on the collapse of the British pound on Black Wednesday generated more than $1 billion in profit. Some outlets, including Forbes, have described Bessent as a protégé of George Soros.
After resigning from Soros Fund Management in 2000, Bessent founded Bessent Capital, a $1 billion hedge fund that closed in 2005. He later served as a senior investment adviser to fund-of-funds Protégé Partners before returning to Soros Fund Management as chief investment officer from 2011 to 2015. In 2013, his bet against the Japanese yen generated more than $1.2 billion in profit in just three months, cementing his reputation as one of the most successful macro investors of his generation.
Key Square Group Era (2015–2025)
In 2015, Bessent left Soros Fund Management to launch Key Square Group, a global macro hedge fund named after a position on the chessboard. Co-founded with Michael Germino, the former global head of capital markets at Soros Fund Management, the firm received a $2 billion anchor investment from George Soros. Key Square used geopolitics and economics to make macro investments.
The firm’s main fund returned 13 percent in 2016 but struggled to deliver consistent gains between 2017 and 2021, before rebounding in 2022 and 2023. Assets under management shrank from $5.1 billion in 2017 to $577 million in 2023, and institutional investors fell from 180 to 20 over the same period. In 2024, the firm earned double-digit returns by betting that U.S. stocks would rise after Trump won the presidential election. Bessent announced he would sever ties with Key Square after his confirmation as Treasury Secretary.
Secretary of the Treasury Era (2025–Present)
On November 22, 2024, President-elect Donald Trump announced his nomination of Bessent to serve as the 79th United States Secretary of the Treasury. At his January 16, 2025, confirmation hearing before the Senate Committee on Finance, Bessent advocated for tax cut extensions and tougher economic policies on China and Russia. The committee advanced his nomination 16–11, and the full Senate confirmed him 68–29 on January 27, 2025. He was sworn in the following day by U.S. Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh.
As Treasury Secretary, Bessent oversees the federal government’s financial and tax policy. In early 2025, he granted the Department of Government Efficiency team access to the Treasury Department’s payment system and was briefly named acting director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, where he ordered all work to halt. He has also played a central role in the Trump administration’s trade agenda, defending broad tariffs, warning trading partners against retaliation, and supporting efforts to pressure U.S. allies to reduce economic ties with China. In September 2025, he announced a $20 billion economic lifeline to Argentina, finalized on October 9, 2025, to help stabilize the country’s economy.
Notable Events and Milestones
Bessent is the first openly gay person to lead the U.S. Treasury Department and the first openly gay Senate-confirmed Cabinet member in a Republican administration. The day of his Senate confirmation, a man armed with Molotov cocktails and a knife who intended to murder Bessent was arrested at the United States Capitol. In April 2025, Bessent and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick were credited with persuading Trump to pause many of the sweeping Liberation Day tariffs.
