Known as the “King of Modern Bachata,” his solo albums include Formula, Vol. 1; Formula, Vol. 2; Golden; Utopía; and Formula, Vol. 3. He has collaborated with mainstream artists across genres, expanded bachata’s international audience, and sold out major stadiums in the United States, the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Chile, and Peru.
Early Life and Background
Anthony “Romeo” Santos was born and raised in the Bronx, New York City, on July 21, 1981. He was born to a Dominican father and a Puerto Rican mother, and he grew up in a humble household. His father worked in construction and was often underpaid, while his mother stayed at home to care for him and his siblings.
Santos attended public school in the Bronx and began his musical journey by singing in a church choir at a young age. He was exposed to Latin genres such as salsa, merengue, and bachata through his parents’ love of the music. As a teenager, he discovered a cassette of Dominican bachata artist Anthony Santos, noticed the shared name, and was immediately drawn to the genre.
Inspired by that recording, Romeo Santos committed himself to bachata and began performing locally. His early influences within the genre included Juan Luis Guerra, Luis Vargas, Raulín Rodríguez, and Frank Reyes, alongside broader Latin music figures such as Celia Cruz, Héctor Lavoe, and Marc Anthony.
Path to Music
In 1993, Romeo Santos met his cousin Henry Santos and friends Lenny Santos and Max Santos. The following year, in 1994, the four formed a group initially called Los Tinellers. They performed as a traditional bachata act before reinventing themselves in the late 1990s as Aventura, a group designed to fuse bachata with R&B, hip-hop, pop, reggae, and rock. In 1998, they signed with Premium Latin Music, managed by Franklin Romero, and began recording their debut album.
Aventura released their debut album, Generation Next, in 1999, aiming to bring bachata into the mainstream. Their 2002 single “Obsesión,” from the album We Broke the Rules, became a global hit, topping charts in France, Germany, and Italy. Aventura followed with additional studio and live albums, spawning international hits such as “Hermanita,” “Ella y Yo” with Don Omar, “Un Beso,” “Los Infieles,” and “Dile al Amor.” The group became the first bachata act to sell out Madison Square Garden in 2007 and performed at the White House for President Barack Obama in 2009 before going on hiatus in 2011.
