Swizz Beatz Early Life and Background
Kasseem Daoud Dean was born on September 13, 1978, in the Bronx borough of New York City. He spent much of his childhood raised by his mother in the North East Bronx, where he first encountered the sounds of hip-hop. After obtaining equipment from his stepfather and uncles, he began DJing as a teenager and enjoyed early local success.
His family later relocated to Atlanta, Georgia, after repeated incidents of violent behavior at Harry S. Truman High School. In Atlanta, he started working for his uncles, Joaquin, known as Waah, and Darrin, known as Dee, who were co-chief executive officers of the Ruff Ryders record label. He attended Stone Mountain High School during this period, where he began to focus on music and production. The Dean family’s deep ties to the music business shaped his path from an early age.
Swizz Beatz Path to Music
With his uncles and his aunt Chivon Dean all involved with Ruff Ryders, Swizz Beatz began producing tracks at age 16 and was signed to Ruff Ryders Productions as a producer and songwriter. A year later, he sold his first beat to Ruff Ryders artist DMX, which became the chart-topping single Ruff Ryders’ Anthem. The song was placed on DMX’s 1998 debut album It’s Dark and Hell is Hot, launching Dean into the national spotlight at just 19 years old.
He went on to produce for major artists including Jay-Z, Noreaga, Eve, Nas and Memphis Bleek, helping define the Ruff Ryders sound of the late 1990s. In 2001, in a joint venture with executive Clive Davis, he established his own label, Full Surface Records, as a subsidiary of J Records, and signed Philadelphia-based rapper Cassidy as the imprint’s first artist. That same period marked his transition from in-house producer to label executive and recording artist in his own right.
