She took a job with Summa Corporation and worked summers as a waitress at Caesars Palace throughout the 1980s. While working for Summa, she attended Clark County Community College, now known as the College of Southern Nevada, and received an associate degree in computing and information technology in 1985.

After completing her education, Rosen began working for Southwest Gas, where she was employed from 1990 to 1993. According to her own account, she later ran a small consulting company between 1993 and 2002, serving clients that included her former employer and a Las Vegas physician group.

    Early Career (2016)

A former computer programmer with no prior political experience, Rosen was asked by U.S. Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid to run in the 2016 election for the U.S. House seat being vacated by Republican Joe Heck. On January 26, she declared her candidacy for Nevada’s 3rd congressional district.

Rosen won 60 percent of the vote in the Democratic primary election and narrowly defeated Republican nominee Danny Tarkanian in the general election. She was sworn into office on January 3, 2017, beginning her career in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Rosen announced her candidacy for the U.S. Senate on July 5, 2017. Her campaign was endorsed by former President Barack Obama and former Vice President Joe Biden. During the race, she emphasized her support for the Affordable Care Act and criticized incumbent Republican Dean Heller’s vote to repeal it.

On November 6, 2018, Rosen defeated Heller with 50.4 percent of the vote to his 45.4 percent. Although Heller carried 15 of Nevada’s 17 county-level jurisdictions, Rosen carried the state’s two largest, Clark County and Washoe County, winning Clark County by more than 92,000 votes. She was one of only two non-incumbent Democrats, alongside Kyrsten Sinema of Arizona, to win a Senate seat that year, and she became the first woman to go directly from a freshman House seat to the Senate.

    Seniority and Reelection (2019–Present)

Rosen has served as the junior United States senator from Nevada since 2019. During her time in office, she has focused on health care policy, including protections for patients with preexisting conditions and efforts to address rising insulin prices.
